The University of New Mexico Radiation Safety Office is seeking a results-driven professional to join our team as a Radiation Safety Specialist.

The Radiation Safety team members and management work with the Radiation Control Committee (RCC) and supports radiation use on the UNM campus and various locations in New Mexico. The Radiation Safety Office maintains four radioactive materials licenses including a broad scope license, a reactor license, a commercial radiopharmacy license and a cardiac clinic license. The UNM Radiation Safety Program includes the University of New Mexico Health Sciences Center (HSC) which is the largest academic health complex in the state.

The Radiation Safety team is responsible for ensuring the safety of individuals using ionizing

radiation at the UNM campus and in other locations where these items may be used by University

faculty and staff. Our objective is the protection of people and the environment from unnecessary

exposure to radiation. We accomplish this by providing a radiation protection program to the

University community which is in compliance with both Federal and State radiation protection


The successful individual selected for this position will be responsible to:

  • Participates in the development and implementation of university-wide radiation safety programs.
  • Provides general advice to the university community regarding safety protocols and procedures to ensure regulatory compliance as mandated by local, state, and federal agencies.
  • Conducts training and orientation sessions for employees to minimize potential safety hazards, including exposure to radiation.
  • Oversees the collection, correlation, and dissemination of safety data; keeps detailed records of dose histories, bioassays, x-ray equipment, overexposures, and instrument calibrations.
  • Assists in responding to emergency situations involving hazardous materials, radiation, or fire and smoke incidents; prepares reports of findings and submits recommendations.
  • May monitor and instruct medical patients receiving exposure to hazardous substances during treatment procedures.
  • May lead and/or guide the work of lower level safety technicians and/or student employees.

Conditions of Employment
  • Possession of a valid New Mexico driver's license is a requirement for this job.
  • Successful candidate must submit to post-offer, pre-employment physical examination and medical history check.
Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree; at least 3 years of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.

Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Graduate degree in Health Physics, Medical Physics or similar related discipline

  • At least 3 years experience working in Radiation Safety Program

  • The successful candidate must be eligible for unescorted access privileges to radioactive sources of concern that are subject to Increased Controls Regulations by US NRC and NMED.

  • Demonstrated experience developing and delivering training designed to protect radiation workers, the general public, students, laboratory, and other personnel from radiation hazards

  • Computer support and project management skills, including ability to manage and develop RSO management software and the RSO Website are desirable
