Authorization Specialist - Title: PSR –Authorization Specialist Department: NPS Cardiology New Windsor JOB SUMMARY: Responsible for obtaining precertification/prior authorization and medical review for each patient in which testing or procedures have been ordered by the office. Possess solid knowledge of insurance verification, payor guidelines, ICD-10 coding and gathering of clinical documentation from EMR prior to initiating precertification. Position is Monday through Friday 8:30am to 5:00pm. PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES: · Identifies all appointments and procedures scheduled that require authorization by monitoring the schedules daily. · Identifies the referral and authorization requirements of the patients' insurance plans by using various online resources. · Advises patients and clinical staff of problems with insurance authorizations and re-submits requests with additional or revised information. · Verifies insurance eligibility and benefits, and updates the patient's insurance information as necessary. · Interact with patients' physicians and other staff, both within the practice and at outside facilities, providing accurate, timely, and responsive information. · Contact insurance companies via on-line website or by telephone to obtain prior authorizations in advance of office based testing and procedures performed at outside facilities (nuclear studies, echocardiograms, stress echocardiograms, vascular studies, MRI, CAT Scans) · Responsible for entering authorization approval numbers, time frame and supporting documentation upon verification that procedures are authorized · Responsible for monitoring authorization requests and expiring authorizations for accuracy · Must have excellent communication, organization and follow-up skills with the ability to handle multiple assignments simultaneously · Scans authorization approval into EMR · Covers front desk receptionist as needed · Ability to work well under pressure · Maintain patient confidentiality · Maintains a positive working relationship with the staff to ensure clear communication and handling of all patients and provider needs · Other job duties as required QUALIFICATIONS: Knowledge of medical terminology Ability to analyze and interpret data Knowledge of insurance companies methods of obtaining precertification Knowledge of CPT and ICD codes EXPERIENCE: 1+ years' experience in medical practice environmentWestchester Medical Center
