Physician Assistant / Nurse Practitioner (Department of Corrections) - PHYSICIAN ASSISTANT: INTRODUCTION The Physician Assistant shall provide the Department of Corrections, Central Detention Facility and Correctional Treatment Facility, Health Services Division, expanded care to patients by exercising independent judgment related to patient assessment, diagnosis, treatment, and counseling. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS ? Provides preventive, diagnostic, and therapeutic services to patients, under the supervision of a physician who shall, at minimum, have constant availability through electronic communication.Provides preventive, diagnostic, and therapeutic services to patients ? Obtains medical histories and conducts physical examinations and evaluations as appropriate.Obtains medical histories and conducts physical examinations and evaluations as appropriate ? Orders and interprets laboratory/radiology testing, as appropriate. ? Makes diagnoses and prescribes therapeutic measures of care, including prescribing and dispensing medications. All Rx issued by PA must bear the printed names of the PA and the supervising physician, although the PA alone may sign the Rx. PA may order controlled substances as long as they have a valid DEA license. ? May give medical orders to health professionals consistent with institutional policies. The PA may perform procedures and other tasks delegated by physician within that physician's normal scope of practice. ? Provides teaching for health maintenance and specific health problems and develops/participates in screening programs. ? Makes appropriate referrals to specialists, 24-hour shelters, and hospitals. ? Recognizes and manages common acute and chronic illnesses within her/his scope of practice. ? Provides immediate emergency care as needed and makes arrangement for transport to appropriate hospital or health service when necessary. ? Ensures a supervising physician's name is on all chart documents for which the PA provides care. ? Ensures a delegation agreement is provided to the DC Medical Board with a copy on file at the primary practice site. ? Ensures all orders and progress notes are countersigned by a supervising physician within ten (10) days. ? Collaborates, as needed, with social worker, medical-clerical assistant, and physician responsible for team regarding treatments, referrals, and follow-up care of patients. ? Conducts peer review and quality improvement activities on a regular basis. ? Attends meetings as assigned. ? Performs other related duties as required. QUALIFICATIONS ? Must have graduated from an accredited physician assistant program and pass NCCPA exam. ? Must maintain current DC PA License. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED ? Preferably 2-3 years of experience in ambulatory care setting with some experience in a correctional facility. ? Familiarity with standard concepts, practices, and procedures within the field. NURSE PRACTITIONER: INTRODUCTION The Nurse Practitioner shall provide the Department of Corrections, Central Detention Facility and Correctional Treatment Facility, Health Services Division, comprehensive medical care as delineated by UHC. The Nurse Practitioner provides expanded care to patients by exercising independent judgment related to patient assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of diseases, counseling, and comprehensive care to DC Department of Corrections' patients. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS Provides preventive, diagnostic, and therapeutic services to patients. · Obtains medical histories and conducts physical examinations and evaluations as appropriate. · Orders and interprets laboratory/radiology testing, as appropriate. · Makes diagnoses and prescribes therapeutic measures of care including legend drugs and controlled substances. · Counsels patient and provides teaching for health maintenance and specific health problems. · Makes appropriate referrals to specialists and hospitals. · Recognizes and manages common acute and chronic illnesses within her/his scope of practice. · Develops and participates in sick call, urgent care, intake, chronic care, and screening programs. · Provides immediate emergency care as needed and makes arrangement for transport to appropriate hospital or health service when necessary. · Collaborates, as needed, with social worker, discharge planners, mental health clinicians, medical-clerical assistant, and physician responsible for team regarding treatments, referrals, and follow-up care of patients. · Provides coverage as needed to care for the patients to include at least one holiday shift per year. · Performs other related duties as required. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS FOR THE POSITION Must have current DC RN license with certification by the ANCC or AANP, DEA license, and CDS license. · Should preferably have 2-3 years experience in ambulatory care setting with some contact with homeless patients. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES · Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Skill in organizing resources and establishing priorities. Ability to analyze medical records and to conduct medical/nursing research. Ability to perform complex medical record reviews and to evaluate clinical data. Knowledge and understanding of clinical organization structure, workflow, and operating procedures. Skill in interpreting information and preparing reports and trend analyses. Skill in examining and reengineering operations and procedures, formulating policy, and developing and implementing new strategies and procedures. Strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community. Knowledge of nursing theory and practice. Skill in the use of personal computers and related software applications. Records maintenance skills. Knowledge of related accreditation and certification requirements. Investigative skills pertaining to medical/legal claims and litigation. Knowledge of current and developing legal issues and trends in area of expertise. Knowledge of medical malpractice law.
