Job Description

This is an excellent opportunity to work for one of the top law firms in the U.S. Davis Wright Tremaine LLP is looking for an experienced Director of Human Resources to join our team in Seattle. 

This position will provide leadership and direction in all areas of human resources management on a firm wide basis.  Broadly defined, the responsibilities include but are not limited to strategic policy and program development and administration, development and administration of compensation practices, employee relations, staff talent acquisition and onboarding, partner and employee benefits administration, and HR information recordkeeping and reporting.  In addition, this position will act as a strategic HR advisor to Practice Group Chairs, Partners-in-Charge, C-Suite leaders, and other members of senior management.

Your Contribution Includes:
  •  Policy Administration:  Manage the development and implementation of firm-wide human resources policies to further the firm’s strategic objectives.  Provide training and coaching for directors, managers and supervisors in policy interpretation and implementation in areas such as hiring, terminations, performance management, wage and hour laws, workplace harassment, FMLA, ADA, EEO, etc.
  • Compensation Administration:  Establish the firm’s wage and salary structure, pay policies, and incentive systems for staff positions.  Oversee the administration of the firm’s staff check-in and goal setting programs, and year-end salary and bonus setting processes.  Lead competitive market research to establish pay practices and pay ranges that help to attract and retain star performers.  Ensure principles of pay equity are followed.
  • Benefits Administration:  Oversee the development, administration, communication and reporting of all firm partner, non-partner attorney, and staff benefits programs, including health and welfare benefits, 401(k) plan, and leave benefits.
  • Employee Relations:  Determine employee relations practices necessary to establish a positive employer-employee relationship and promote a high level of employee morale and motivation.  Identify and monitor the organization's culture so that it supports the attainment of the company's goals and promotes employee satisfaction.
  • Staff Talent Acquisition:  Provide leadership and oversight of the management of firm wide staff full cycle talent acquisition and onboarding programs.
  • Firm Compliance:  Lead company compliance with all existing governmental and labor reporting requirements including any related to the Equal Employment Opportunity (EEO), the Americans With Disabilities Act (ADA), the Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA), Employee Retirement Income Security Act (ERISA), the Department of Labor, worker compensation, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), and so forth. Ensure minimal company exposure to lawsuits. Conducts investigations of more complex complaints.. Serve as the primary contact with the firm’s internal employment counsel.
  • Strategic Advisor:  Act as a consultant and trusted advisor to C-Suite management, directors, senior managers and office administrators in matters such as organizational structure, employee change management, performance management and employment terminations.
  • Other HR Responsibilities:  Hire, coach, manage and develop HR department team members. Develop and monitor annual department budget.  Ensure HR department deliverables align with the firm’s strategic goals.  Review, guide, and approve management recommendations for employment terminations.
Join us if you have: 
  •  Demonstrated deep knowledge and experience in federal, state and local employment laws and practices, compensation, organizational planning, organization development, employee relations, and training and development, required
  • Bachelor’s degree in business administration, HR administration, or related field required
  • Juris doctor degree preferred
  • Prior experience in a professional services organization, preferably in a law firm preferred
  • 10+ years of progressive HR management experience, with at least 3 years of experience leading an HR organization, required
  • PHR, SPHR, or SHRM certification preferred
  • General knowledge and application of federal, state and local employment laws required
  • Strong oral and written communication skills and ability to communicate effectively and collaboratively with company leadership, owners and/or Board of Directors, required
  • Demonstrated experience investigating employee complaints involving employment laws required
  • Excellent interpersonal, skills, coaching skills and organizational skills required.  
  • Sound decision making abilities and judgment, coupled with a sense of urgency and bias for action required
  • Demonstrated ability to lead and develop HR staff members required
  • Demonstrated ability to serve as a successful participant on the senior management team that provides company leadership and direction required
  • Excellent computer skills in a Microsoft Windows/Office environment
  • General knowledge of various employment laws and practices
  • Experience in the administration of benefits programs required
  • Evidence of the practice of a high level of confidentiality
  • Active affiliation with appropriate HR networks and organizations and ongoing community involvement preferred
  • Possess ongoing affiliations with leaders in successful companies and organizations that practice effective HR Management
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
While performing the duties of this Job, the employee is regularly required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel and reach with hands and arms. The employee is frequently required to sit; stand; walk; and occasionally stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 10 pounds.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
